Sarkozy seeks the criminalization of reading Internet hate sites

Freedom of expression deserves greater protection in France, where the Internet is being filtered, thought/expression is criminalized, and documentary films are still being censored. This week’s announcement by President Sarkozy, made in the heat of both a national trauma and an election campaign, continues this disturbing pattern. Reporters Without Borders reminds us that freedom of expression is not just an academic issue but has concrete ramifications:

Such measures could…have serious consequences for investigative journalism and studies of terrorism. How can one investigate the growing use by terrorist groups of the Internet and social networks without monitoring what they post online?
