「どうして時間の『まえ』は『うしろ』なの?」

詳しく聞いてみるとこういうことだ。空間的に進む時、「前」とはこれから到達する地点であり、「後」とは既に過ぎた地点である。しかし時間的な話をする時、「前」とは基準時から見て 既に過ぎた時点を指し、「後」とはこれからやってくる時点を指す。 英語も同様だ。それはなぜか、という。

これは面白い。川合さんの息子さんは典型的なアメリカ育ちの発想ですね。

欧米的な自分を主環境を従として、自己中心から前後を決める決め方だと、たしかに過去が前で未来が後なのはオカシイとなる。しかし、東アジア的な考え方では、自己が環境に包摂され、自己が主にもなるし環境が主にもなることができる。そして、何が前で何が後ろというときに、ただちに認識できるものが前、ただちに認識できないものが後と決めれば、空間的な前後は自己が主で環境が従というように欧米的な基準と同様だけれど、時間的な前後は時間が主で自己が従となって欧米的な基準と逆になるのだと思いますよ。
