Madrid Market Finds

This February Alex & I headed to Madrid.

Madrid means a lot to me, having spent a great deal of time there whilst I was traveling alone around Spain, and more importantly being the place Alex asked me to marry him. So I was very pleased to be returning. Also there was a truly happy coincidence, the monthly Madrid vintage market would be on the weekend we were there!

The Market is housed in Madrid’s Railway Museum. The stalls are set out with professional makers and vintage trader stalls held between the trains and platforms. There was much on offer, including vintage homewares, vintage clothes, handmade jewellery, quirky industrial lighting, taxidermy butterflies, blankets, child’s toys, handmade textiles, artisan food and the most beautiful handmade shoes.

Then outside the building, placed along the old railway lines and train sheds are the non-professionals, selling their wares in a flea/carboot fashion. There is space for more than 100 stalls selling everything and anything that they no longer need or want.

I purchased this rather kitsch ‘Girls with cats on bike’ picture from the outdoor market for 10 euros. Alex purchased a pair of never worn 'Nudie’ Jeans for 1 euro..yep 1 euro!

Then when you have had your fill of shopping there is a huge outdoor space offering live music, food stalls, beer and the new favorite drink of the Madrileno, Gin & Tonic. Plus a very sweet ride-on kids train! To pay for the drinks and food you first purchase tokens, 1 Euro or 5 Euro’s. Though if you don’t use them all you can return them to get your cash back.

I’m very sure that the Summer months must bring even more stalls and people. The food area must really come into it’s own too, with the Madrid summer heat, a cold beer and some live jazz would be a perfect way to spend a weekend.

Basically, this Market is totally worth a visit (even the trains are lovely to look at!).

The Market takes place Saturday & Sunday every second weekend of the month, opening 11am till 10pm. Head to the Metro stop 'Delicias’.
