In the immortal words of Christopher Wallace, “here’s another one”.
This episode’s a little different. Sarah was ill and sadly unable to attend this instalment of the Cinema Club (which was also intended to be a big farewell episode for her), so we got fellow Sunshine Radio volunteer Ben to read the news.
Marcus and I reviewed the films (Skyfall, The Day of the Jackal & Brake), and we invited Ben, as someone who hadn’t seen the films we were discussing, to ask questions that people might be curious about before choosing to see them.
Like myself, Ben has a background in film study. As a result, this fortnight’s episode has more conversational tangents and focuses more on film theory than previous episodes.
But don’t let that put you off if you like your film talk light! We still manage to keep things fun. Especially when we review/berate Brake…
The time has come to review the sequel to one of our favourite movies.
The original Raid (reviewed here) was the first movie to ever score a 9 out of 10 on the show, and was our favourite film of 2012 (listed here).

WE’RE BACK! After a six month break, it feels great to be back recording the Sunshine Cinema Club with Marcus at the helm.
Unfortunately, this episode is also Ben’s last as part of our power trio, due to his upcoming moving of house. We wish him all the best. He’s a fantastic critic.

Over the last couple of months, fellow SHR volunteers Marcus, Sarah and I have been developing a film programme for the station. We also wanted to be able to share this programme with the rest of the world as a podcast, and we’re pleased to say that it’s now available for everyone to listen to online.
“Feeds” and “servers” and other technical things are being discussed, but for now you can stream and download the two most recent episodes on our Soundcloud page.
Our Cops ‘n’ Robbers episode is above, with reviews of The Sweeney, The Raid and The Untouchables (as well as movie news, the box office and DVD charts, and a quiz too). Our third, Sci-Fi themed episode is also available, and has reviews of Total Recall (2012), The Hunger Games and Blade Runner (The Final Cut).
When it comes to planning these shows, some themes are easier to figure out than others. For example, this Saturday we recorded a Western-themed episode, with the films we discussed already clear choices (feel free to guess what they were).
This episode? Not so simple. But we found a theme that worked in the end, even the films we review aren’t exactly similar in terms of execution.
We missed the cinematic release, but we made damn sure to catch up with Catching Fire once it hit DVD. Listen to our review!

Nick’s Favourite Music of 2023
It’s that time of year again (three weeks into January because to hell with arbitrary deadlines) where I look back at the music I enjoyed from the previous year. Once again, I’m sticking with the single post, capsule review format I used last year, because it turns out working full-time leaves you with less time to spend on other stuff (seems pretty fucked up if you ask me).
It never feels like my listening habits are changing year on year, but it’s interesting to note the differences in hindsight. For instance, this will be the first time I don’t crown an “album of the year”. Ultimately, there wasn’t a full-length release that broke through my admittedly ridiculously high standards. That said, 17 of the songs on this list come from albums I really enjoyed listening to, and the other 3 are standalone singles, so it’s fair to say the overall quality of 2023’s music was pretty good. I had to put in the time and listen and re-listen to a lot of different artists to come to that conclusion, but it feels like I’ve gone on a similar journey for the last four years in a row now. And, because I always end up discovering plenty of new acts and settling on 20 songs that I truly love that I’m excited to share, I never feel like that time and energy has been wasted!
