8 AUTUMN “MUST DO’S” IN NEW YORK CITY

The weather may be cooling down, but there are still a lot of fun outdoor activities to do in New York City. My son and I fill up our fall weekends with fishing, biking and trips on the Staten Island Ferry (just to name a few). I’ve rounded up eight “must do’s” for enjoying autumn in NYC—all of which are kid-approved:

1. Pier I in Riverside Park South (off of West 70th Street) is one of my favorite spots along the Hudson River. You can fish off of the pier with your own gear. In the past we’ve caught baby blues, bass and even an eel!

2. Another great excursion is to go bicycle riding along the Hudson River Greenway on the Westside. This bike path extends all the way from Fort Tryon Park to Battery Park. I enjoy riding along the Greenway to the High Line with stops at parks along the way. Go to nycgovparks.org for more information on the city’s bike routes.

3. The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is a Manhattan institution located at Pier 86 in Midtown West (West 46th Street and 12th Avenue). Check out the Space Shuttle Pavilion, a missile submarine and more fascinating exhibitions all aboard The Intrepid aircraft carrier. This fall you can enjoy events such as Astronomy Night (October 4th) and Fire Department Appreciation Weekend (October 11-12th).

4. The vibrant foliage in Central Park just before the leaves fall is always breathtaking. Take in even more stunning sights from the Great Lawn and while going for a boat ride on the Lake. Tip: boating season in Central Park runs from April through October, so enjoy while you can! You can rent a row boat from the Loeb Boathouse 10am-5pm daily.

5. Spending a day at Central Park would not be complete without a visit to the Central Park Zoo! Kids can see all of their favorite creatures from mammals to amphibians, and participate in exciting events like Family Fun Day (October 12th). Tip: you don’t have to go to the zoo to spot animals in Central Park. We’ve enjoyed bird watching in the past. The park’s website offers a list of areas for spotting bird species in the “Things to See and Do” section.

6. Chelsea Market (75 9th Avenue between 15th and 16th Streets) is a great indoor venue to visit when the temperature drops this season. Treat yourself to doughnuts from the Doughnuttery or goodies from the aptly named Fat Witch Bakery.

7. For the best photo-ops board the Staten Island Ferry from Whitehall Terminal at 4 South Street in Manhattan. The ferry is just a 25 minute trip to the St. George Ferry Terminal on Staten Island, but along the way you’ll take in amazing views of the Statue of Liberty and Manhattan Skyline. Oh, and the fare is free!

8. The Metropolitan Museum of Art (1000 5th Avenue) is not only for adults with a taste for fine art. The Met offers a slew of programs for kids from the hands-on “Sunday Studio” sessions to storytime in Nolan Library. For a lineup of family-friendly programs this fall go here.
