BIG FLAVORS, LITTLE KITCHEN

If you are into Global food, entertaining without a sweat, or simply have a small kitchen but like big flavors - this one is for you.

A couple of weeks ago I received a dinner party invitation from a friend with the title A Taste of Two Islands.  The invitation read,

“…You will feel as though you just arrived on a Caribbean Island with these mouthwatering dishes right here in New York.”

We often rotate dinners between our families - and unless we order in, there’s always a challenge for the hosts to create a great meal and socialize.  This is especially difficult in small Manhattan kitchens that not everyone can squeeze into.

It turns out that my friend discovered this interesting website called Kitchensurfing.com  and wanted to test it out on us.   The concept is simple.  On the website, you get paired up with a private chef who comes to cook for you in your home.  It’s all done in a few easy steps: choose cuisine, choose a menu from the chef of your choice, and use their website to send an invite to your friends.   No need to worry about the cooking (or food shopping); You can sit back, catch up with your friends and family while enhancing the aromas coming from your kitchen.

The chef comes to your house with groceries, cooks and, the best part, cleans up the kitchen afterwards (you still need to do your own dinner dishes) while you are enjoying the company of your friends and family.

In our experience, everything was prepared from scratch.  As far as the costs, it’s anywhere from $50 to $80 per person. The cost covers the chef, ingredients, cleanup and even gratuity. The events could be a big family dinner, meal with friends or simply a date night.

If you are curious what was on the A Taste of Two Islands menu, here is the list of the mouthwatering dishes:

-Stuffed plantain patty

-Jamaican jerk chicken

-Trinidadian curry chicken

-Turmeric scented coconut rice

-Coconut corn bread

-Island style vegetable medley

-Pina colada bread pudding

My favorites were the plantains, curry chicken and bread pudding - though all were tasty!  I’m not affiliated or promoting Kitchensurfing.com - and this being NYC, I’m sure that there are many wonderful and competing services out there.  I just wanted to share this delightful experience.
