I’ve been doing a lot of digging through the internet for stuff to post on this blog, and I came across this old article from tosche-station. At one point Kevin J. Anderson, the author of a metric crap ton of Star Wars books, says:
“If you look back at it, Luke…
If I dive into this, I’ll never get out, but I wouldn’t read too much into it. This was a really, REALLY big thing in the 90s and there was a lot of confusion about it with the authors and publisher being given conflicting instructions or none at all. There was very little coordination, control, or continuity in those days.
IIRC, the origin of this was the long-held assumption that Jedi were celibate. This MAY have been (Because George Says) BGS and/or it may have been fear of contradicting AOTC and Anakin and Padme’s secret marriage. Or all of the above.
KJA created this whole mantra in his books about how, there is no passion, there is no desire, there is only the Force. A lot of readers at the time were all, uhhh, whut? Where did Luke and Leia come from then? The principle was always being eroded in the other EU books of the Bantam-Spectra-Scholastic era – eventually Hambly did have permission to give Luke the love of his life, Callista, who was in a computer and it led to virtual reality sex and body snatching – so weird. The TPM Visual Dictionary identified one of the Jedi on the Council as having a wife (and maybe 2) and that was the only proof that pre-Rebellion Jedi could have romantic attachments and Qui Gon had a romantic thing with the Jedi Tahl in the Jedi Apprentice books.
Even when AOTC was being scripted, and Luke did end up marrying Mara Jade, I think the Union comic was still ambiguous about whether Jedi could marry. One interpretation was that Jedi could have sex, but couldn’t have any emotional attachment.
I have no idea how this is all dealt with now, but then, it was all over the place. I would definitely not assume that anyone who was driving the bus at the time had any sensitivity to or awareness of any gender issues, asexuality, or anything else. It was all het and traditional marriage and maybe not even that.
