Our Last Weekend, Last Weekend
Last weekend we wrapped up a full month of programming and brought The Big Draw Chicago 2012 to a close.
On Saturday, we watched an early morning bridge lift at the McCormick Bridgehouse and Chicago River Museum. After the bridge lift, we collaborate on an exquisite corpse drawing in the gear room, drew with chalk by the riverwalk, and drew the indigenous plants and animals we observed by looking through windows at various levels of the Museum.
While some of us were at the Bridgehouse Museum, others were at the Robie House practicing Hokusai drawing. We sat in the Billiards Room and traced drawings, focusing on geometric shapes. We colored in our drawings and shared them with friends and strangers.
In the afternoon, we headed to Mischief Night at the Hyde Park Art Center. There were participatory art activities in every corner of the Center; Big Draw Chicago was happy to be there with exquisite corpse drawing activities in the elevator and in stairwells, as well as a mask-making exercise in one of the studios.
On Sunday, we headed to Berger Park to draw maps with local cartographer Dennis McClendon. He walked us through three exercises, all focused on exploring what to include or exclude when trying to represent a physical area.
The weekend was a good representation of the month’s programming: large-scale, participatory activity alongside intimate and thoughtful activity, time spent in cultural institutions and public spaces, strangers and friends drawing, thinking, and sharing. The month was amazing–thanks to all of our partners organizations, participants, and general support from the community.
We’re going to catch our breath and will be in touch soon with some updates. Stay tuned!
