Australian producer Mikey Perry has been on his grind. Under solo moniker Paces, he’s been releasing future bass and trip hop tracks while touring alongside the likes of TNGHT, Kaytranada, and Ryan Hemsworth. He also continues to release hip hop-leaning tracks and tour as part of production duo Surecut Kids.
Perry first caught our ears under his Paces moniker with his remix of YesYou’s “Frivolous Life.” Later, we fell in love with his Pact EP. Now, we’re happy to learn the feeling is mutual as he’s made us an exclusive mixtape. Clocking in at 20+ minutes, this mini-mix is filled with party-starting dance tracks and smooth sounds so as not to overheat you.

As a kid, my dad used to take me surfing all the time. He was into NWA for a while so we used to blast it on the way to the beach. I was fascinated by all the swear words but it was also the start of my love affair with hip hop and the many genres that it opened the door to.
You’re from Australia’s Gold Coast. What’s the music scene like there? [Also, will you send us a pic of your favorite beach?]
Australia has a good music scene overall. If someone like me can make a decent living from music, I really can’t complain. Although some places are better than others. On the Gold Coast where I live there is just nothing at all for my type of music. But if you travel to Sydney, Perth, Melbourne, etc. you’ll find really strong, diverse music scenes.
Here’s a pic of my favourite beach - the one straight in front of my home.
Who are your influences? Are you influenced by your contemporaries?
I’m influenced by so many people, constantly. Sometimes if i’m stuck on a song I’ll listen to 20 seconds of whatever song is at the top of my iTunes and often i’ll find inspiration in that. It’s a good way to break out of writers block. But as far as specific people who influence me at the moment, these guys: Cashmere Cat, Ta-Ku, Lunice.
Who would you most like to collaborate with?
The person who I’d most like to collab with is Beth Gibbons from Portishead. They’ve been my favourite group since I was 16 years old. If I ever did get the opportunity to have her sing on a track I’m sure I’d find it hugely intimidating!
What’s next for you?
I’ve just finished a new single so that should be out in the world in the near future, followed by another live tour. I’ve got a few collabs underway too. Plenty of projects to keep me busy!
If you could have one wish, what would it be?
Just that my friends and family would always be safe, healthy and content. Is that counted as one wish or three?
