Really, they’re whoever they *decide* they are.
(But agreement on the rarity of news.)
It sounds like she’s a male-assigned female-identified intersex person, which kind of makes me feel a little bit smug… but I also feel like it being presented that way makes it seem like people have to be their ~biological gender~? Dunno. Interesting story, though, thanks for sharing.
It kind of bothers me that Stevie decided, apparently very solidly, on female identity after finding out she was intersex, but then the article insists on “he” all the way through.
Kind of wondering what the AP Stylebook has to say about switching pronouns in mid-article, now. It could be the editor, not the writer.
