The new hardcover edition of the Claremont/Miller Wolverine issues is pretty top-notch. Nice bind, lays flat, all that good stuff. The paper is a little too glossy for my taste, but that’s the way it goes, I guess.
While looking at it I pulled down the original TPB to do a little comparison. I guess this had to have been new in ‘88? '89? The first thing to strike me was the price then vs now. $4.95 and $24.95, then and now. Yowza! I guess with the two additional issues in the HC and inflation over two and a half decades that’s what happens. The second striking difference was in the coloring. I gotta say, this new edition is pretty spot on with what Miller and Glynis Wein turned out way back when. There are, or course, some minor tweaks and corrections, but over all it’s right on in terms of palette and spirit. Too often do publishers make the mistake of completely re-coloring a work to make it more appealing to modern readers. This edition simply puts a polish on what already existed. A tidying up for a younger readership, if you will.
Now, that said, I honestly can not decide which version I like more. The older edition is more of a peek behind the curtain, more of the process and technique on display. You can see the jagged zipatone cuts and rough marker strokes that poke through the spot black areas. Or where the color plates slipped ever so slightly, revealing a sliver of yellow or magenta. That stuff is awesome. It reminds you of everything a comic book is, in terms of art and production. By comparison, the newer printing is slick and solid feeling. There’s no curtain to pull back here, the black is rich and full. Lines are tightened up. Most of the halftone is jettisoned. I imagine that this is what the artists originally envisioned the end result to look like. Plus, it’s oversized!
They both have their merits, I guess. I’m interested in what other people think. We’re doing an episode on this comic in a few weeks, so these ideas will get a good run around the track, I’m sure.
