Pretty sure that this song is as “1968” as any song can possibly be.

Yeah, pretty much. This and “Classical Gas” and “Angel of the Morning” and “Theme From Valley of the Dolls” and a whole bunch of other songs I’ve assigned “1968” status to, in some cases retroactively, in other cases due to my near-experiencing ‘68ness just a couple years after the fact. “Reach Out” has actually been used (at least) twice on the screen (both big and small) in attempts to nail the craziness: (spoiler alert) during a pivotal historical-juncture scene in “Mad Men,” and in an amazing Canadian documentary from a bunch of years back called Dream Tower, about Rochdale College, which (sez imdb) “chronicles Toronto’s most notorious social experiment of the sixties. Inspired by cultural critic Paul Goodman, philosophies of alternative education, and the decade’s political upheaval…” Truly excellent where-did-it-all-go-wrong movie, and it turned me into an instant fan of this song.
