Carl Jung once claimed that “nights through dreams tell the myths forgotten by the day.” Chelsea Wolfe remains only partially convinced.

“I don’t really believe in dream interpretation. It just depends on how much stress is in your life, and your mind will work that out in its own way,” says Wolfe, L.A.’s reigning high priestess of permanent midnight music. “But even sometimes when things are going really well and calm, I’ll have crazy nightmares. It doesn’t really make any sense. The mind is a wild place.”

Wolfe’s songs skulk at the crossroads between dream and nightmare. Stoner metal riffs confront folky hymns; porcelain melodies weather gothic guitar tempests. They are myths remembered slightly too well.

Her new album, Abyss, features song titles to make the heads of therapists swivel: “Carrion Flowers,” “Iron Moon,” “Maw,” “After the Fall,” “Simple Death,” “Color of Blood.” The lead single is based on the suicide of a Chinese poet whose soul was crushed by sweatshop factory labor. Another was written after Robin Williams took his life. Her fifth album title comes from a passage in Jung’s autobiography, Memories, Dreams, Reflections.

Better Than… staring into the Nietzschean abyss.

Chelsea Wolfe embraces darkness, seems to live by it, even. “Dark” is the best way to describe last year’s Apokalypsis, an album that won accolades for melding black metal and American roots music, among other things.

In support of her recently released Unknown Rooms: A Collection of Acoustic Songs, Wolfe played an acoustic set at the First Unitarian Church on Friday. Because of her influences (black metal is known for its aggressively anti-christian theology) and the less-than-pious image she has cultivated, there was perhaps some incongruity between the artist and the venue. Nonetheless, Wolfe demonstrated that her music is certainly not devoid of spirituality.

Chelsea Wolfe has a cover feature in the July/August 2016 issue of Totally Gothenburg magazine discussing her latest music and her appearance at Way Out West festival.

Chelsea Wolfe and her band will be performing at several EU festivals this August along with a show in Vienna with King Dude. She then returns to the US for FYF Fest and a special just-announced show with the Echo Society in Los Angeles where she will be collaborating with a composer on music written specifically for that concert.
