Irish math rock outfit Adebisi Shank take a ‘say what you see’ approach to naming records: This Is The Third Album Of A Band Called Adebisi Shank follows sophomore effort This Is The Second Album Of A Band Called Adebisi Shank and debut - you guessed it - This Is The Album Of A Band Called Adebisi Shank.

If Adebisi Shank’s album naming methods are a little functional, sonically they are anything but: the band were inspired by a diverse spread of influences in creating TITTOABCAS, including ELO, Enya, Mike Oldfield, Pixar, Crash Bandicoot and Game of Thrones. The result is a retro-futurist brand of math that sounds as close to 80s soft rock and hair metal as it does to the tricksy likes of Battles and Don Caballero.

The album will be released worldwide on Sargent House on August 12th.

Adebisi Shank: “Micromachines”

Irish trio Adebisi Shank, already causing a stir in Europe with its wicked-precise guitar harmonizing and boundless energy, will release its new album, titled simply This Is The Second Album Of A Band Called Adebisi Shank, in North America on March 15 via Sargent House.

Its music isn’t easily categorized, but falls somewhere in the realm of a math-metal version of Battles. The fluctuations in tempo, volume, and overall intensity make each song a progressive exploration of texture and melody. Due in part to a sheer glut of instruments, one minute you’re listening to vicious shredding, and the next a blissed-out Peter Gabriel- /Animal Collective-style groove.

“On the first album, our mission was get in, tear it up, get out,” says Vin, the band’s bassist. “The whole thing is over in about 24 minutes, which is really cool, but this time we wanted to make something that you could really spend a bit of time with, get a bit lost in. This one’s 40 minutes, which might not sound a lot, but to us that is almost like a double album. It’s a big, glorious mess.”

Album of the Week: Adebisi Shank - This is the Second Album of a Band Called Adebisi Shank

Adebisi Shank’s album originally came out last August, but it’s release Stateside and an Electric Picnic slot has made them worthy of another look, writes Dave Donnelly.

OK, this is cheating a little: Adebisi Shank’s second eponymously-titled album actually came out in Ireland last August, but this column didn’t exist last August and I’ve good reason for featuring it now.

Back then, the Wexford instrumental trio were yet to get the call from US mega-label Sargent House, who will release the album Stateside on Tuesday, and their inclusion on this summer’s Electric Picnic line-up (announced earlier this week) was a mere dot on the horizon.

Inspired in part by the group’s touring escapades in Japan, This is the Second Album of a Band Called Adebisi Shank takes the dancey math rock rhythms and guitar heroics of the first album and adds an extra layer of sophistication with softer textures, leaner melodies and even the odd cheesy vocal line thrown in for good measure.

‘International Dreambeat’ eases in with slowly building electronic percussion before exploding to life with bright, ebullient chords. ‘Europa’ is a particular highlight, featuring a layered vocal from Villagers’ Conor O’Brien. ‘Masa’ and ‘Genki Shank’ recapture the frenetic and chaotic energy that made the first record so exciting while ‘Frunk’ offers a more off-kilter Talking Heads vibe.

Adebisi Shank: This Is The Second Album From A Band Called Adebisi Shank (Sargent House)

Released to European acclaim in 2010, the aptly titled second album from Irish electro/math rockers Adebisi Shank has now achieved North American release thanks to the peerless Sargent House.

The record label / management company describes the trio as a blend of Fang Island’s shredding riffs with Battles’ electronic quirkiness and rhythmic playfulness. That description isn’t off the mark, but readers won’t get a sense of the band’s real abilities until they hear its hyper-melodic, polyrhythmic, and — most importantly — jubilant songs in full.

Over 40 minutes — a self-described “double album” given the band’s riff-intensive style —Second Album delivers a maelstrom of zany electronics, unusual distortions, and triumphant, rapidly ascending scales mixed with vintage synths, marimba, horns, and other accoutrements.  This is all packaged between and around gloriously catchy and powerful rock riffs.

It’s a manic and buoyant sophomore effort.  Simply put, Adebisi Shank is a revelation.

Adebisi Shank: This Is The Second Album Of A Band Called Adebisi Shank
If I showed any amount of foresight, I would have paid attention to what I had in my to be reviewed pile and have reviewed Adebisi Shank on Thursday. It would have been fitting to review the band that The Daily Telegraph called one of the “top 5 best new Irish bands” on St. Patrick’s Day. Instead, I forgot I even had the album until it just surfaced at the top of my pile.

I guess there is not really any harm in it. It is not like Adebisi Shank’s style is stereotypically Irish; their music features no bagpipes, fiddles, or tin whistles. Their music also features no vocals which makes it hard to pinpoint where they are from. What their music does feature though is blistering guitars, driving drums, and a solid rhythm section.

The group’s sophomore album, This Is The Second Album Of A Band Called Adebisi Shank sounds like Fang Island doing a Battles cover album. It is amazing how similarly Fang Island and Adebisi Shank’s guitar sounds are but Adebisi Shank’s song construction is a little closer to Battles in respect to imagination.
