What happens when Ohio based Photographer Nick Fancher comes to stay with us in Los Angeles for a few days? Well we end up having him do a quadruple header photo shoot of four of our bands - all shot at Sargent House and now featured  on our new site The Farm Family

Two weeks after I started interning at Sargent House, I was sent on a full US tour with Marriages. For someone who is not a musician and has never been on the road in this capacity, this was a totally new experience. On tour you’d expect to make a million new friends in every city but the ones I got the closest to were those I was trapped in a van with for a month straight. Before leaving, I had never even met anyone in either band, so it was a really nice surprise to discover that they were some of the most genuine and nicest people I’d ever met. They each have their own strong personalities (which tended at times to clash), but the passion and dedication put into their music creates an undeniable and necessary bond between them. We had our fair share of mechanical and van problems along the way, but even popping a tire fifteen minutes from the venue proves that while most things were out of our control, at least everyone stuffed in the van was going through it all together.

AN INTERVIEW WITH NICK CAGEAO
BASSIST FOR MUTOID MAN AND SOUND ENGINEER AT SAINT VITUS

Have you been doing sound for Saint Vitus since it first opened?

I’ve been over at Saint Vitus since day one! Or maybe day three? Since they were doing shows. I worked at a bar with David Castillo at the time when they were opening, and when I told him I was a sound engineer he made it happen. I’d known Arty and George from another local bar called Matchless, and had also played some music with Arty.

I saw you post somewhere that you keep the tape strips from certain shows, which have you kept?

I keep some of the board tape from some of my favorite shows. I’ve got Nirvana, Converge, Harvey Milk, Weedeater, Saint Vitus, Pentagram, and a few others!

On September 10th, 2015, Earth played a set in Chicago’s famous Bohemian National Cemetery as part of The Empty Bottle’s “Beyond The Gate” series. Earth played the Cemetery alongside Holy Sons, the solo project of Emil Amos (OM, Grails), and Chicago’s own Disappears. The darkly beautiful setting provided a fitting stage for each band’s own brand of stark and pummeling rock.

Illinois-based photographer Joshua Ford was there to capture Earth’s set.

As quietly unassuming as Brian Cook is in person or over the phone, the bassist has spent the last decade playing to the deafening other end of the spectrum, whether with the hugely influential Botch or These Arms Are Snakes, or in his current and longstanding role in instrumental metal band Russian Circles. Cook’s talents aren’t limited to the stage, either. Alongside his musical work, he’s written for various publications as well as his own personal blog. Cook’s distinctiveness as a musician draws primarily from an exploration of textures and an instinct for restraint over flippant composition. It’s a characteristic that in many ways mirrors the kind of contemplative nature he exudes in conversation. I recently spoke with Brian to talk about the non-metal music he’s always found himself returning to and why narratives make all things better.
