“New solo album from this tentacle-armed Hella drummer and prolific indie sideman. Features contributions from No Age, Devendra Barnhart, Prefuse 73’s Guillermo Scott Herren, Deerhoof’s Greg Saunier, Carson McWhirter, bygones collaborator and Tera Melos’ Nick Reinhart among others.”
Watch the destructive video for “The Sacto Smile”, featuring No Age, below. Directed by Zach Hill and Sean Stout.
Throughout his career, drummer Zach Hill has been especially prolific: in the sheer number of his collaborations (Hella, Marnie Stern, Prefuse 73, Wavves, etc.), in the size of his extended discography, and in the ferocious style with which he assaults his drums. All this constant action has understandably led to moments of both brilliance and self-indulgence. Hill’s 2008 solo debut, Astrological Straits, was an impressive but exhausting affair, filled beyond the brim with non-stop, torrential drumming. On Face Tat, however, Hill puts as much focus on his oddball, malformed songs as on his world-class musicianship, resulting in an album that feels more compact, slightly less metallic, and altogether more fun.
Massively talented and incessantly collaborative drummer Zach Hill (see a semi-comprehensive list of projects here) has announced a fall 2010 release for his second solo album, Face Tat via Sargent House. The 13-track disc features an impressive list of contributors, including Devendra Banhart, No Age (Dean Spunt and Randy Randall), Guillermo Scott Herren (Prefuse 73), Greg Saunier (Deerhoof), Carson McWhirter (Hella), Nick Reinhart (Tera Melos, Bygones) and Robby Moncrieff (Raleigh Moncrieff).
Pitchfork has posted the latest video off the album, featuring a woman on a violent rampage set to the tune “The Sacto Smile”. Watch it HERE. The song features co-writers Spunt and Randall of No Age as well as Tera Melos guitarist Nick Reinhart, who also plays with Hill in Bygones.
Check out the first MP3 download from Face Tat, “Memo To the Man”On Stereogum The song features Greg Saunier of Deerhoof double-drumming with Hill, along with Reinhart on guitar.
Zach Hill explains the origins of Face Tat in his own words:
Zach Hill may just be the hardest working man in the industry. His spastic and triumphant drumming has been featured in countless projects with everyone in the indie world clamoring to borrow his talents for as long as they can hold onto him. As a founding member of instrumental math rock heroes Hella, Hill has also contributed stellar work in each of his other bands including The Ladies (with Pinback’s Rob Crow), Team Sleep (withDeftones’ Chino Moreno), Bygones (with Tera Melos’ Nick Reinhart), Marnie Stern, Diamond Watch Wrists (with Prefuse 73), Nervous Cop(with Deerhoof’s Greg Sauntier), El Grupo Nuevo (with Mars Volta’s Omar Rodriguez Lopez) and still many others. During the mayhem of his musical outpour, 2008 saw the release of his debut solo album Astrological Straits, a collection of warped and bizarre songs light on accessibility but roaring with complex creativity. Steadily growing busier with each passing year, Hill has returned with his next solo offering Face Tat, a twisted array of insanity and mind blowing musicianship as avant-garde as they come. Working with the plethora of bands that he does, Hill has an enormous rolodex of impressive musical friends, and he uses that to his advantage on Face Tat which features many of his oft collaborators as well as some new ones. While calling this album accessible may be a stretch, it certainly heads closer to that direction for Hill with dazzling results. He may have thrown out all the rules of typical song structure and rhythms, but the hooks are present and strangely memorable.
“Self Checkout” was the first song Hella wrote and recorded for their fifth record,Tripper, says drummer Zach Hill: "Technically, it was the first song we’d written together in three years, so in many ways I feel like it created the path for the material that followed.“ If the fast-paced instrumental is any indication of what’s to come, it’s sure to be a chaotic good time.

After Zach Hill and Nick Reinhart finished up their respective albums this year, Zach’s Face Tat and Tera Melos’ Full Length, they decided to embark on their first mini-tour together to bring improvised noise to unexpecting fans.
Zach Hill - Face Tat “The Sun City Girls’ blenderizing of intent and influence, mixing shock and comedy, lies somewhere in the background of “Face Tat,” Zach Hill’s new album on the label Sargent House. Mr. Hill is a virtuosic, hammer-blow, fast-footed drummer who puts his best playing in scuffed, shattered, strobing, overdriven songs and soundscapes. A mind-boggling video of one song from the album, “The Sacto Smile,” came out over the summer and transmits this record’s noisy intensity really well. It tracks a young woman marauding down a suburban street, causing major damage: breaking skateboards, smashing windshields, knocking over garbage cans, setting fire to things. (The cuts in the hand-held camera work are keyed to tiny actions in the music, putting the visual and musical in sync.) “Face Tat” is cartoonishly alive and shape shifting, but the funny thing is that there some are actual tunes here too with Mr. Hill’s enthusiastic singing and big melodies. Teased since March, the finally available debut album from Bygones is a spastic/melodic guitar/drums dichotomy. The duo consists of drumming whiz Zach Hill (of Hella and all other bands) and tech-ish guitarist Nick Reinhart (of indie mathists Tera Melos).
The project sounds very much like one would imagine, but a complex catchy-ness is inherent in nearly every track. The duo’s intermittent utterances and backing harmonies fit better than any conventional vocals likely would.
Zach Hill will be heading to Asia for some shows in Korea and Japan. Joining him on guitar for the shows will be the one and only Carson McWhirter. Yes, those guys together again! check the video of them tracking the Zach Hill song Face Tat from the upcoming new album of the same name.
