As I’ve stated in the past, self-contained artists move me because it shows the many talents that artist has, not having a need to rely on anyone to fulfill their need to create art. Henry Kohen is Mylets and Mylets is Henry Kohen, and on Retcon (Sargent House), he shows that he also has a nice progressive touch to how he puts together his songs. Creating powerful and quaint pop ditties seems to come automatic for him, but what I like about these tracks is how he’ll twist the tempos and textures within the same song. That immediately makes them ineligible for pop radio, but I’m sure there are more than enough outlets out there that will give them a chance.

Henry Kohen aka Mylets stopped by the Taylor Guitars factory for a tour and a Taylor Session during a stop in San Diego on the Sargent House tour. He picked up a slick sounding T5-12 and performed this acoustic version of his new song, “Retcon.” not to be confused with his album of the same name RETCON.

A lot has changed for Henry Kohen a.k.a. Mylets since we last spoke in December. He’s moved to Los Angeles, is now officially signed to Sargent House, and is living in Sargent house with its founder Cathy Pellow. Now Mylets days are filled with non-stop practice, playing, writing, and recording for his new full length which should be out next year. In the mean time Sargent House has released a compilation of Mylets previous works called Retcon, that combines the three E.P.’s that were released prior to his signing to the label. The tracks contained on Retcon are nothing short of spectacular and since I already owned the E.P.’s before the re-release, I can hear a vast improvement on the sound quality due to the re-master and mix from Chris Common (drummer of These Arms Are Snakes and in house Sargent House studio guru). Hearing these re-mastered songs contained on Retcon just makes me want some new tunes from Mylets. Since the wait is killing me, I figured I would get back in touch with Kohen to find out what progress has been made on the new album. Also, I wanted to know how his new life is treating him, what he thinks about being a part of Sargent House, and see what he thought about his new status as an Internet Celebrity.

So during our last interview, you were just about to leave Indiana and head out to L.A. and Sargent House. How cool is it now to be officially in the fold?

Things out here are great! Good weather, good hikes, and I can be as involved or uninvolved in it all as I want. A big change from Indiana, that’s for sure.

The teenage version of a fight between Battles and Tera Melos is perhaps the most unlikely candidate in recent history for a major label debut, and yet here we have Arizona. The brain child of Henry Kohen, Mylets first caught my attention in 2013 when a performance of his song, “Ampersand”, was featured on film for the Sargent House Glassroom recording sessions: words like “prodigy” came to mind when it became apparent that the 19 year-old was creating each and every sound in the song on-the-spot live. There are plenty of loop-rock soloists out there, but Kohen’s intense blend of drum-machine tracking, dextrous guitar playing and angst-ridden vocals makes something exciting and altogether so satisfying to absorb.

Arizona finds the young performer struggling to escape the innocent and awkward notes that his first extended plays, wrapped up recently in the compilation Retcon, understandably failed to avoid. Vocal takes are doubled and often feature a louder or shouted rendition behind the more melodic lead. The real star of the record is the guitar work, which can most closely be compared to Los Angeles math-rock band El Ten Eleven, which also features prominent looping and a masterful knowledge of the fretboard. Arizona moves around more than most of its contemporaries, owing in part to the one-man-band shtick: songs feature plenty of stop-start interludes broken apart by different timings, effects and tempos, some more welcome than others.

I’m so glad to have had the opportunity to see Mylets, aka Henry Kohen, in a live setting. He delivered a delightfully intense and impressive set at his last appearance in Montreal while on tour with TTNG and And So I Watch You From Afar. His ability to navigate back and forth from his guitar, his pedals, his vocals, and other various other tools is captivating. He definitely demonstrates great presence, especially considering that his last album, Retcon, is a solo project. I sat down with the young Sargent House prodigy to discuss his biggest experiences to date, the improvisation involved in his live looping techniques and their limitations, his guilt-driven writing approach, and what we can expect from him in the future. I must say that he is quite a cerebral, smart, and intense young man. One that many young solo artists look up to as a source of inspiration.

Mylets, the one-man-band of Henry Kohen, recently released the first of his three part live performance videos for the Sargent House Glassroom Sessions, of which “Ampersand” (below) quickly went viral, racking up over 65-thousand views by word of mouth.

Today we have posted the third and final Mylets video “Seven Diamonds Plus One” (posted above at the top).  The studio version of the song will be available on the forthcoming collection of songs remixed and remastered from three previous EPs as well as all three glassroom session tracks as bonus’.  Retcon marks Mylets’ debut release on Sargent House and serves as a precursor to the full length debut currently in the works and planned for release early next year.

And Mylets is not only a pedal wizard as you can see in this acoustic glassroom video below of  him performing “Slow Walker”.

Mylets will also play for the first time overseas at the Indiependence Festival in Cork, Ireland on August 2nd on the Sargent House stage along with Bosnian Rainbows, And So I Watch You From Afar, TTNG, No Spill Blood and more to be announced.

Retcon will be available for download on May 7th, 2013 and is available now for PRE-ORDER on vinyl coming out on June 25th, 2013 via Sargent House.

I’ve been watching and listening to this young fellow for a while now his name is Henry Kohen but he goes by the name Mylets. I fell in love with his music when he was just a wee lad and had only his first EP “Colossal Grin” posted. We stayed in touch because he was only 17. I waited until he was legal (last week!) and then scooped him up. He represents to me one of my favorite parts of having Sargent House which is to nurture and develop musicians we think show unique ability. I’m looking forward to watching Henry grow up here. I’m such an uber fan of the music he’s made all by himself so far so I can’t wait to watch, hear and be ringside for his debut full length. I’ve got an interview to share with you all that was actually done earlier in the year with Henry Kohen otherwise known as Mylets. Henry’s music was first recommended to me whilst conversing with a good friend about how I was trying to find an artist who was a creative cut above what I was listening to at the time.. What followed from that conversation was an intense binge of continuously watching Henry’s live performances on YouTube as well as a lot of headphone listening to his brilliant 2013 LP Retcon.

Henry’s over the top lyrical and instrumental style is complimented appropriately by his wild voice and genuinely intimidating guitar skills, this kid is absolutely set to be a trailblazer over the next few years, mark my words and enjoy the interview!

Firstly, I’d like to start off by saying thanks so much for being a part of taken by sound.. For those readers out there that haven’t heard of Mylets before.. Who are you, and what do you do?

I’m Henry Kohen and I have been writing and performing music under the name Mylets for a couple years now. My aim as Mylets has been to compose and perform everything by myself both live and in studio.

When did you get your start in music? And do you remember what your aspirations where before you ended up falling into being a full-time musician?
