Island Highway, Nanaimo, BC.
Gordon Foy, a traffic engineer, was recently recorded telling Nanaimo city council that there was no alternative to this stroad ripping through the neighborhood.
Gordon, I’m sure you’re a good person. I’m sure your UBC Transportation Mobility Management degree taught you to parrot the line that there is no alternative to this deadly stroad design for wide streets that enable through-traffic.
Unfortunately, Gordon, it’s simply not true.
Gordon, you and your fellow grads have had your chance to experiment on us, and your experiment has killed and impoverished millions. Please stop, now, before your deadly stroad designs do any more damage.
There are well known and well documented alternatives to this deadly stroad, Gordon, even if they’re not found in your standard manuals. I’ve gathered a few dozen here for your reference. Your lazy ignorance leads directly to death and economic loss, cutting a neighborhood in two and sapping value from surrounding properties. Although I want to give you and your engineering colleagues the benefit of the doubt, it’s hard not to see malign intent in repeated, predictable negative outcomes.
This is not the 1970s any more. Your stroad designs have been tried, and have been found severely wanting. Please, Gordon: try again, but try differently.
