Redemption, Justice And Execution
The greatest hope that we receive from God, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit is the power of redemption. We have the hope and belief that anyone, at anytime can be entirely transformed.
For those of us in the holiness movement, we believe that in God’s love and grace we can experience a life of peace and fulfillment through love. We hope to honor God through a life that is filled with complete love, calling for justice for every image bearer of God. Understanding that peace comes through calling for love for everyone, we are compelled to call for justice.
“Therefore, just as your heavenly Father is complete in showing love to everyone, so also you must be complete” (Matthew 5:48 CEB).
Today I call for justice. We, as a society, cannot sit back and watch as we execute Kelly Gissendaner and do nothing. To do nothing would be to violate the belief that you and I can be redeemed. If Kelly cannot be redeemed, then neither can we.
In 1998 Kelly Gissendaner was convicted of plotting the murder of her husband, a murder that was carried out by her boyfriend. During Kelly’s time in prison she has transformed her soul and life through Jesus Christ. She has since completed a theological program through Candler. She has been denied clemency multiple times, and will be executed in Georgia tonight at 7pm.
Regardless of her crime, regardless of her certificate, this is a matter of redemption. The goal of our justice system should not be revenge.
Tonight, at 7:15pm, I will pray for the Lord’s forgiveness. Forgiveness for our society and our failure to believe in redemption.
