Democratization of health data (Netherlands)

It is happening. It is happening everywhere… Democratization of data, the drive for more transparency by the masses. The use of this open data to connect, create and in the case of healthcare - to cure. Open data can and will help spur the next wave of entrepreneurship that focuses on social good while  pivoting the business models in this global marketplace with a local focus. These entrepreneurs & data geeks (see recent Forbes article: Data Scientists: The Definition of Sexy) will use this data to come up with new and actionable businesses that will help grow local economies, find cost savings in those systems and ultimately create jobs. And jobs is what EU needs..

Opendata movements are spreading across this digital world and Netherlands is no different - Netherlands is one of the few European countries listed on the Wikipedia Open Data page (others listed: UK, Belgium, Spain, Italy, France, Portugal & Estonia).

Few months back I went to an event that was created and organized by Open State Foundation. HackDeOverheid has currently a number of facets around open culture, open education and ofcourse open health data. Open State Foundation is now helping raise awareness around open health data. So, On October 13th, HackDeOverheid will host another hackathon in HackDeOverheidRotterdam, but this one marks a new chapter in Dutch openness. Ron Roozentaal, CIO of the Ministry of Health will give an opening brief on 3 new datasets that are being exposed to the public. It is a tremendous start of democratization of health data. Here are the links to the currently avaialble datasets or a brief description:

Kosten van Ziekten (Cost of Illnesses) - this is breaking news and was just opened up today, October 1st

BIG-register which provides information on over 400,000 registered caregivers, last updated in August of this year

KiesBeter (Choose Better) - this dataset was opened up in June with the latest update this past August and provides information on hospitals: name, address and contact details, specializations, polyclinics, general services and medical facilities (how about a mobile app?)

Regelhulp - no official announcement on the open data that will be provided so stay tuned. This portal provides content and information on healthcare, welfare, parenting and more.

Jaarverslagenzorg - no official announcement on the open data yet either but hold your horses - it is coming.. Take a look at the site to imagine what data could be opened up publicly.

Register for the hackathon now or even better: come with an app and enhance it live with

more data and with feedback from others (hackathons are not just for the data geeks so we are hoping to form teams that consist of practitioners, healthcare communication experts and more). Also Health 2.0 will be awarding €500 for the best app designed during the hackathon. See more details on the day’s agenda for #openzorgdata
