Duotrope is an invaluable resource—one to which I donated money, when I had some, that once—in sifting through the morass of lit magazines both fledgling and entrenched. It tells you where there might be a short-story contest you can pay $25 to enter, or whether the website you just submitted to has been defunct for six years. Most important is the weekly digest of new markets, particularly new fiction markets, and especially new paying fiction markets. This is who will actually pay you for your work, should they accept it. Many times you are forced to wonder how they got the money.
