Roman Holiday, 1953

Famed costume designer Edith Head designed Audrey Hepburn’s wardrobe for the 1953 film Roman Holiday. The costume pictured above, now considered a classic, was a symbol of nonconformist ideals and individuality, portrayed in Audrey’s character, both on and off screen. Edith Head actually designed the classic ensemble specifically for Hepburn’s shape, including a full skirt, white tucked-in blouse with a belt accentuating her waist, and the archetypal Roman shoes. Over 50 years later, this look still comes across as timeless and modern.

Bonnie and Clyde, 1967

Inspired by the trend of French New Wave, Bonnie and Clyde heavily influenced fashion trends of its time, popularizing the bohemian style. Faye Dunaway’s attire as Bonnie Parker, including her infamous beret highlighted by her blonde bob, remains an iconic image of the 1960’s. Also trending at the time was the miniskirt, which Dunaway’s mid-length skirts challenged, playing on the masculine, yet utterly feminine, styles of the 1920’s and 30’s. Her costumes helped make dropped hemlines stylish again, influencing a relaxed, sexy-chic approach to fashion.

Rear Window, 1954

Undoubtedly one of Hollywood’s most unforgettable films to influence fashion, Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window is yet another example of designer Edith Head’s skill and creativity. Playing the leading lady, Grace Kelly’s wardrobe is the epitome of sheer elegance, still inspiring women to look glamorous, accentuating the female form while maintaining elements of minimalism and sophistication. Each of the costumes that Kelly wore in the film influenced the look and feel of fashion at the time. Grace’s effortless poise and simple tailored pieces became an aspiration of style that left a deep impression in the fashion world, remaining to this day.
