Hyperbole and Problematic Nonsense Kills Good Points

babycakesbriauna:

nikkisshadetree:

I’ve had some laughs about the latest SR debacle courtesy of a NYT article that ostensibly sought to promote HTGAWM. But the ensuing debacle and commentary that it has inspired just left me with thoughts of my own that I had to get out. Some may be unpopular, but y’all know me and know that IDGAF. My spirit has moved me and this is what I want to say about the situation.

Sometimes I wonder if people dislike SR so much that it will allow them to ignore bullshit just because it contains some jabs at her. Because that’s much of what I saw on tumblr (I didn’t see it on twitter, I saw the opposite, which I will make a comment about below) and I would hope that most of y’all were smarter than that. Maybe I missed it, but I didn’t see many nuanced comments that parsed the good stuff from the fuckshit. Just because you don’t like SR (shit, I’m not here for her either. I give props to here for being a black woman who has gotten this far in a field that is very male and white, but she’s like Tyler Perry to me, so…) doesn’t mean that you can’t call out the bullshit.

This entire piece spoke my thoughts and captured the truth of this incident.

I think everyone should meditate for the last two paragraphs

Now see, the above issues pointed out are problematic as fuck. When you have good and salient points and/or observations but surround them with fuckshit and hyperbole, people dismiss what you say. It makes it easy for people to ignore said good points and/or observations and focus on their anger and at your nonsense. Hyperbole makes it easy to ignore good points and people do this all the time to varying degrees, whether they ignore you 100% or ignore the good point in favor of getting on your for the fuckshit. To be honest, there are some people I follow who make posts that I automatically ignore because I know it will have unnecessary hyperbole even when the post they have reblogged from has none of that. Making unnecessary links to Shonda in order to call her names just makes me think you are unable to come up with salient points, whether in agreement or disagreement, so I ignore you. See there? That’s why surrounding a good point with hyperbole is ill advised.

So yea, basically, the author of the article is getting dragged because she thought she was giving a compliment (according to her comment to TPM) about SR doing something new with the ABW trope, but she wasn’t and that’s why people are coming to SR’s defense, warranted or not,…and the good points of her article were easily overshadowed by her bullshit. And just because you don’t like SR, it doesn’t mean you should jump to agree with things that are idiotic and problematic and contain fuckshit. One can dislike her and still be nuanced and parse issues as they arise.

The bold pieces are so important. It’s cute to keekee and come up with shady nicknames but there is a time and place for it. Know when to use it so your sound points aren’t lost folks.

Guys please don’t be blinded by the hate and fall for the okie doke. If you follow me you know how I feel about SR,from her work on Greys, PPP, Off the Map, and Scandal. With that said, I’m not going to sit back and gobble up problematic dialogue because it fits a narrative I’ve been selling. Use your critical think skills and context clues. This entire piece was a way to shit on black women and mask it as a compliment providing critique. Just because it doesn’t outright say (this a racist piece) doesn’t mean you can’t find 2+2 to make 4. If you all missed that, I worry about you. Because the same folks running around talking about “stay woke” every chance they get are the ones that fell for this garbage.
