What’s up with *mnemonics*?

Besides being a hard word to spell, a “mnemonic” is something that helps you remember something.

A terrible spelling mnemonic that should be abolished forever is “I before e, except after c.” Here’s why this mnemonic sucks:

There’s no point remembering a “rule” that has literally hundreds of exceptions.

Here’s a much better mnemonic (for a vocabulary word):

A “mélange” can be viewed as a “mixture” (the definition of “mélange”) of a “MELon” and an “orANGE.” If you learn what “mélange” means through this visual mnemonic, we bet you’ll never forget it.
