I love your blog, and I'm hoping you can help me! This is something that's always escaped me: how do you punctuate a parenthetical? Like, if I end a sentence with parenthesis, I never know if I put the period inside or outside the end bracket? And does it change from a regular sentence to a citation? Not knowing this is problematic!

Here is how to punctuate parenthetical statements:

1. If the parenthetical statement is a complete sentence that comes at the end of another complete sentence, here is what to do:

2. If the parenthetical statement is not a complete sentence, put the appropriate punctuation outside the closing parenthesis (if it’s needed):
