Art deco was a fleeting movement that sparked between two great world wars, but forever left its mark on the culture of the early 20th century.

One of the most lavish and decadent eras in history, this cultural phenomenon oozed glamour and opulence. The British Empire was now seeping in the beauty and wealth from it’s colonies and commerce. The Victoria and Albert museum inspired artists and designers with artefacts collected from Persian empires, Indian nobility and Egyptian temples.

This decadent and lavish flair inspired the fashion of the time. Fashion illustrators and designers were swept in this trend for all things Turkish and Byzantine.

Young ladies skimming through the late-night members clubs of Mayfair wore headbands inspired by the costumes from ancient Persian manuscripts. Dress designs reflected the folds and drapes of Turkish dress and harem costume.  Layers of pearls necklaces were inspired by illustrations of elegant Indian courtesans.

Women bobbed their hair, wore lipstick, sipped gin and rebelled against corsets. Drop waists created an elegant silhouette. Coco Chanel paved the way for a simple, minimalist but elegant chic.

Chanel A/W 12 had a palette of contrasts- forever outlined black. Gold slipping through sable and deeps crimsons; shades of burnt umber echoed the glows of far-off exotic landscapes.

It’s not even December, but the hype for the Great Gatsby has sent ripples through the fashion circles already, revamping this style for the next generation.
