The competition between peers is what drives girls to lose weight. “When I see how skinny the girl next to me looks, I don’t want to look fat in comparison, so I am motivated to diet until I am even skinnier than her”, quotes Carla*, a grade 11 student at Langstaff Secondary School. When questioned further, the majority of high school girls denied having eating disorders, despite having a constant need to control what goes into their mouths. “The word ‘eating disorder’ sounds too scary.
