Binge Drinking Fact Sheet

What is binge drinking?
Binge drinking is consuming a heavy amount of alcohol in a short period of time.

  • 5 or more drinks in a row for men.
  • 4 or more drinks in a row for women.

Interesting Statistics:

  • About 75% of the alcohol consumed by adults in the United States is in the form of binge drinks.
  • About 90% of the alcohol consumed in the United States by youth under the age of 21 is in the form of binge drinks
  • In 2000, almost one in five underage persons aged 12 to 20 were binge drinking.
  • Students who were binge drinkers in high school are three time more likely to binge drink in college.
  • 70% of binge drinking episodes involve adults over age 25.
  • Binge drinkers are 14 times more likely to report alcohol-impaired drinking than non-binge drinkers.

It is estimated that American’s 12 million undergraduates drink the equivalent ofsix million gallonsof beer a week.”

Risk Factors:

  • Unintentionally injuries: car crashes, falls, burns, etc.
  • Intentional injuries: sexual assault, domestic violence, firearm injuries, etc.
  • Increased risk of alcohol poisoning

Signs someone may have alcohol poisoning:

  1. Extreme confusion
  2. Vomiting
  3. Unable to wake
  4. Slow or irregular breathing
  5. Seizures
  6. Low body temperature

Heath Problems:

  • High blood pressure
  • Stroke and other cardiovascular diseases
  • Liver disease
  • Neurological damage
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Increased risk of sexually transmitted diseases
  • Unintended pregnancy
