In New York, employment in physical production in film & TV (NAICS 51211) has seen a dramatic turnaround since 2008, which is the year NY increased their incentive rate from 10% to 30% and started hiking the annual cap from $60 million to $420 million.
After bottoming out in 2004 (28,546 jobs), the number swelled to over 45,00 in the last two years.
As for post-production, New York has enjoyed a modest recovery due to the post-production standalone tax credit (for projects that film outside the state) in addition to the production tax credit (for projects that shoot in NY and elect to do post there as well .
Before celebrating the success of post production in New York, it is important to note that employment in the “teleproduction” subcategory has recovered from a decline in 2008-2010 but the levels in the last few years are nearly identical to where they were from 2001-2007 and below the peak reached in 2008.
The gains in teleproduction offset massive losses in the other subcategory of “other post production”, which mainly involved film processing (which is becoming obsolete).
