Surabaya
Another travel. Sadly, this time for work.
Was invited to adjudicate at an open debate competition from June 3rd-6th, 2011. I was invited because I’m widely available, would never reject any moment to travel, and have a strong feeling for money. Beside, I had the chance to meet a special long time friend, which later became the highlight of my trip. The only thing worth remembering from the trip.
Boyfriend said a business trip is not something to be enjoyed (or some sort of it, I cannot recall his exact sentence). But I guess the fact that I did not get to enjoy my trip to Surabaya was beyond that. Sure, work is never fun, no matter how much you love your job. Sure, I did not go there with my favorite crowd. But there is something about the city that always prevented me from enjoying it.
Which is strange, as my mother is hailed from Surabaya.
Anyway, from financial point of view, I consider this as quite a costly travel, even though almost half of my expenses were reimbursed. The main reason was because after work, we spent most of our time at the malls, just the way we always do in Jakarta. I spent almost IDR 2.000.000, and was reimbursed for IDR 710.000 (USD 1 = IDR 8.583). However I got to stay for free at a nice, clean, safe, three stars hotel (www.twinhotel.co.id), which is not bad at all. A bit plain, but not bad.
Once again, I took my favorite mode of transportation: airplanes! Citilink by Garuda Indonesia Airlines is definitely my favorite low-cost airline for domestic travels. Nice service, since this is the national airline. Interesting airplane color (Yes, this matters. I have to feel good with the pattern and design on the plane’s body). The stewardess wears bermuda pants, looks very comfortable. And they are relatively cheap, as cheap as any low-cost airlines on normal situation.
Had a ‘sepat’ soup at my bestie’s house earlier today. It is basically a traditional Sumbawan dish with seafood, basil, roasted corn, and cow-hide cracker. A bit like Thailand’s tom yum soup; hot and sour, but the action was with the cracker and the roasted corn. Yum.

Why I (try to) travel a lot
The truth is that nowadays, people go to school to get grades. Learning (with capital L) just don’t happen anymore. This is where travelling could step in.
Sometimes I do not think it is necessary to own those Lonely Planet travel guidebooks. They are too expensive and its content can easily be found on the internet, with more updates and personal insight.
Besides, it is also wiser and more spiritually-enriching to talk to local people and find things out first hand.
I’ll be in Bali in hours, and I have planned to write a travel journal. Stay tuned.
