We’ve all been waiting to see what video Jack White would release first, and just as I predicted, it’s my favourite track on Lazaretto, “Would You Fight For my Love?” The anticipation may have went a little too into overdrive, because I’ll be the first to say I was a little disappointed with the video. No doubt it was artistic in typical Jack White Tim Burtonesque style, and the prominent blue hues remained faithful to the theme of the album. The subtle theatrics in the silent body language from all characters also provided robust moments highlighting the tension between White and the female lead. In the end however, it just wasn’t enough for me. The song has far too much passion to be suppressed to a still-shot bar scene. White could have…no, NEEDED to provide more variation in his character! I could cry! The lyrics reveal a deep level of heartache and betrayal by past women in his life, so much so he has grown accustomed to the pain, and his identity begins to unravel. When I use to listen to the song, you could hear the emotion in his voice; he was feeling and reliving every single word, which is one of the main reasons why I love this guy. His music is raw and real, and he’s never afraid to take risks. The mere image of him playing the “stare game” was just a tad bit frustrating. Also, am I the only one who felt the female lead chanting those eerie “Ooohs"was a bit awkward? Just, why?! Nontheless, Jack White looked dapper in his sky blue suit, sans wrinkle, which I guess makes up for the inadequacy.
