Project 25: City Flags

I chose to do my hometown of Philly. After doing some research, it seems like a couple people besides myself felt like we needed a refresh. Living in Chicago for a bit, I agree with Michael Burlando that while our city has a lot of pride, it’s not for our city flag. It’s also been said by Sandy Smith as well that we deserve a better flag. Some local guys have also taken stab at this, specifically the talented folks at Bresslergroup.

These things considered, I had a rich history and a good base to aim my redesign. For my execution, I went for iconography which was much simpler than our current seal. Instead of choosing something like the Declaration of Independence or the Liberty Bell, I chose to adapt the 13 star pattern which was originally on the Betsey Ross flag. It’s a throwback to the time when Philadelphia was originally supposed to be the nation’s capital, and I think that having the radial stars is something that could eventually be something that’s iconic, simple and own able for Philadelphia. And hey, if it’s good enough for the 76ers I’m sure the rest of the city won’t mind it.

The big issue when coming up with a identity for a city is rallying people behind it. Which I initially thought was going to be an issue, but while searching through images of Philadelphia, I saw a lot of times where we were unknowingly embracing these colors. The Eagles, Phillies, Flyers and Sixers all have alternate colors which are getting close. The Union is already really close to the flag’s colors. We also have murals which match the colors pretty closely. The last three photos in my series are actually unaltered shots from the city.

It’s in our city’s DNA, all we have to do is bring up more support for it and have people realize that this is something that can be our’s. Something we can all get behind.
