Persepolis, in modern Iran, was the ceremonial capital of the Persian Achaemenid Empire.  At it’s height, the Persian Empire ruled over the largest percentage of the world’s population as any empire in history.  Despite the Empire’s cosmopolitan nature, Persepolis was built exclusively in the Persian style, although it did incorporate materials from around the Empire.  Much of the city was destroyed by Alexander the Great in 330 BCE, and the importance of the city declined.
