Alison Humphrey

I pay homage to a collective of feminine identities who are obligatory commodities of the political, social and historical circumstances in which they existed or were imagined. Encompassing the humour and reality of everyday living and occasional dreaming, I create personally adapted or appropriated images, because I appear and encumber the roles I perform with an element of my personality. All images allude to aspects of the self which may be gained or lost, bought or sold, and may have value. I set aside special times and places when it is no longer a requirement to be who I am; times when it is appropriate or even imperative to become someone else. The modern materialization of something people have always sought- the masquerade, the temporary disguise which excuses the expression of another side of the self. Relating to fantasy, to desire, to the desire to fantasise about appearing as if one is in fact another. The images maybe be viewed as my quest to locate fixed roots in the most immutable aspect of myself. My identity swapping is a private performance. I am subject, photographer and audience, this necessitates multiple viewpoints of the self. I participate in the drama and observe myself participating.
I acknowledge the humour in the homage. I am looking at you looking at me and laughing.
