Mr. Max
We ended up at Mr. Max in a roundabout way, ironically from a mention in a Montreal travel magazine. It was an excellent stroke of luck though. Mr. Max is a little piece of Tokyo. The area is…not so chic (in Irving off of Beltline near the Irving Mall), but inside is cozy. The windows are all covered; the walls lined with menu items in Japanese & signed photos of sports stars who’ve dined there. There’s lots on the menu to try, but we started with tonkatsu curry (one of the dishes we miss most from Tokyo) & yaki soba (a childhood favorite of mine). It was delicious & we’ll definitely be back to this little gem. (The gentleman next to me at the bar had a small fried fish—head, tail & all—that I eyed for next visit.)
