This is a piece I made for an upcoming gallery show based on yakuza film-inspired art show entitled BATTLES WITHOUT HONOR AND HUMANITY after the film of the same name. It will be held at Floating World Comics in Portland, OR! I initially created more action oriented concepts, but after having researched more and reflected deeply on their overall principles, I decided to focus on the more quiet route of the Yakuza’s everyday existence amongst the average community members. The part that intrigued me was the fact they consider themselves more business men than criminals, much like the Mafia crime syndicate.
Also, since it’s hard to see here and I thought it looked cool on its own, I’ve included the three step process I took to make the faded figure in the background. This is also representative of a method in which I’ve been working lately. I will make the initial drawing on bristol paper, but then I will ink various segments of the same image on separate layers of vellum or tracing paper. This allows me to make alterations and adjustments on size or placement while I’m in the digital process. It will also be a necessary portion of a long-term project I’ll be working on at my company dobot, which is a design company that my friend and I have started. You will be seeing this name alongside mine on many future products. Find out more here!
