Because the insulating properties of their feathers eventually breakdown, Jackass penguins molt once a year and for the 21 day cycle they are land-bound. To physically survive, they eat like crazy for about 5 weeks before to increase their fat stores. Psychologically, I am not sure how they prepare for the feather name-calling and ridicule. Penguins can be so cruel… ;-)
