Musicians Go Solo: We Can’t Be, Señora
About two weeks ago, the team behind Balut Radio, an Internet music radio station, invited Anna, JP and I to interview two musicians who are creating ruckus in the local music industry: Basti Artadi and Krissy Villongco.
Normally, I’d decline invitations like these because I’m neither a music blogger or a big OPM aficionado. In fact, the last OPM album I bought voluntarily was Kami nAPO Muna. But since the interview invitation came from a friend, I said yes. Besides, after months and months of attending gigs to support my boyfriend’s band, I’m starting to appreciate the thriving indie scene of local Pinoy music.
The livesteam show started with Basti Artadi and the Nice Ones performing some of their songs from their album.
For those who are clueless like me, Basti is the current vocalist of the band Wolfgang. According to him, it took him eight years to finally pursue a solo album entitled Everybody Knows That the Dice are Loaded. Wait, what? Solo album? To Wolfgang fans out there, relax! He’s not leaving the band. He’s just creating an album that is not fit for Wolfgang’s music aesthetics. :)
Since we were only given one lapel to use, we agreed to let JP do the interview for the band. JP is quite passionate with his craft, so it’s no wonder if his questions revolved around two things: favorite gear and place to perform live gigs. The band, particularly Marco De Leon, became excited and started saying a lot of music gear jargons. And even if I don’t understand much of it, I knew that JP’s set of questions could help a lot of aspiring musicians who are tuned in to the show.
Up next was Krissy Villongco, the ½ of the sibling duo Krissy & Ericka, who became widely known through their acoustic videos on YouTube. Ericka was also there, by the way. I never got to interview her but she looks very supportive of her sister’s solo career, because why would she be there in the first place if she wasn’t?
Most musicians often perform with a guitar, so we couldn’t help but ask why Krissy chose the guitar. She shared to us that before she learned to play the guitar, she was playing the flute and was taking vocal lessons at a very early age. And it was Ericka who taught her how to play the guitar. And while she has no specific process in writing songs, she did share to us that songs on her album are heartfelt.
After their respective sets, we all had a photo-op with the artists. Naturally, they all complimented my new hair but it was Krissy, who I thought was really sweet, that took me by surprised. She asked to have her picture taken with me. Haha.
So that’s about it. In case you missed the live stream and would like to watch how I sound like on video, subscribe on Balut Radio‘s YouTube page because they’ll definitely upload the full-length episode soon.
