The man in the bug costume is Hide Tozawa, former personal chef for Tsuyoshi Nishioka and the future chef at the upcoming Kyatchi, making us great omakase on Halloween. That’s cheek of amberjack, scallop, tuna belly, some random nigiri, shrimp and deep-fried shrimp heads. Not pictured: lots of other sushi. Hide has made us omakase before and he is always brilliant. I can’t wait to belly up to the sushi bar at Kyatchi.

We braved the icy streets last night to make it to opening night at Kyatchi, chef Hide Tozawa’s new Kingfield restaurant. With a focus on sustainability, the fresh fish menu (like the space) is smaller than you’ll find at most sushi spots around Minneapolis, but quality definitely makes up for quality here. Pictured above: battera (pressed mackerel), scallops (perfect with just the juices of the slice of lemon touching it) and salmon. I also recommend the amaebi nigiri and the ramen.

Speaking of food trucks, tomorrow is probably the last day for some of them in Minneapolis-St. Paul, and I imagine others will be closing up not too long after this week. 

One of the worst parts of working in the suburbs is the lack of good lunch options nearby, so I’ve had only a handful of chances to check out the booming food truck scene in Minneapolis the past year. I can count the trucks I’ve ate from on three fingers. The voracity with which I chowed down their offerings means I don’t have any photos to share.

Anyway, if you’re in a position to tomorrow, go out an enjoy a food truck before they are all gone for the season. I’ve put together this handy Twitter list of food trucks in Minneapolis and St. Paul.

Ecuadorian restaurants in Minneapolis

A tweet last week from a fellow hungry marketer spurred me to spend an hour of my Saturday morning looking for Ecuadorian restaurants in Minneapolis. Sadly, I only found four (and I already knew of three of them). I learned along the way that Ecuadorian restaurants in Minneapolis must feel obliged to also serve Mexican food to keep the gringos happy; what else explains this City Pages taco challenge?

As far as I know, none of these places serve the most stereotypical Ecuadorian dish, so your best bet is still to call ahead to Chino Latino if you’re craving guinea pig. (Though I only found a single restaurant outside Quito that had guinea pig on the menu when I was in Ecuador.)

Considering I live within a half mile of Patisserie 46 and the new Minneapolis Sweets Bakeshop location and Sunstreet Breads, I don’t need the NY Times to tell me that this is an awesome baking town. But I’ll take it.

Bars Bakery I hadn’t heard of, but I’m-a have to go check that out.

let me just remind you that when you take away the fixed-gear bike, the messenger bag, the scarf that’s worn year-round, the ironic t-shirt, the dumb shoes, the pbr, the tattoos, plugs, and the stupid beard, we all look the same.

so, are you really in love with a guy or his accessories? or is it that you’re in love with the whimsical idea of an urban lumberjack type who will go on “adventures” with you, meanwhile being perfectly content with doing what every other human being our age does: drinking and fucking?

also, tell me about the last black guy you dated. what’s that? you can’t? cause every fucking uptown hipster is a white boy from the suburbs.

the uptown wannabes from the suburbs grow up idolizing the current inhabitants. when they’re old enough, they move there, grow beards and do the stupid shit that kids do (eg. drink). what’s ironic is that this new generation then grows up and becomes the new kids to be idolized by the new uptown wannabes from the suburbs. it’s an endless cycle of superficiality, facades, and stupid kids seeking affirmation from their peers.

the truth is, NONE OF YOU ARE COOL!

i wish i could be there, 20 years from now, when you look back at pictures of yourselves from today. it’s like explaining zubas in the 90s to someone today.
