The latest from Glacial Movements boss Alessandro Tedeschi is a dreamy blend of field recordings and atmospheric electronics. At the base of most tracks are field recordings of underground caves that Tedeschi recorded 10 years ago, manipulated, layered, and then added to with synth pads and effects. The result is an icy, dreamy wash, sounding like the chilly counterpart to a warm, 90s ambient label like Silent. Despite the minimalist drones of the opening of the album, most of these six tracks are far more layered and dense and active than one might expect. “85°50’s 65°47'e” evolves into a deep, ebbing tide of sound, anchored by a rumbling low end thud and accentuated by metallic chimes in the distance, while “Polo Nord dell'Inaccesibilità” gradually reveals itself to be a melancholy, stately dreamer of a track. The massive low-end of “Hymns to a Melancholic Sunset” lends it a strange gravity in contrast to the washed out, airy pads that otherwise comprise it. Tedeschi isn’t exactly breaking new ground with Netherworld, but he is quite good at shaping his ideas into chilly passages of sound that envelop you. The contrast of warm and cool in his excursions is like icy hot for the ears.

New Zealand ambient veteran Rosy Parlane makes a welcome appearance on Touch with these two concise cuts recorded in Auckland in 2008-09. It’s been some time since I’ve heard anything new from him, but these pieces remind me that I should pay more attention, as both tracks are excellent. “Willow” is a hazy glimmer, four and a half minutes of droning harmonics and textural crackle. Like its cover art (as usual, a gorgeous photograph by Jon Wozencroft), it suggests the vibrant and unpredictable color of nature reflecting on the surface of water, subtly and constantly changing, never entirely faithful to the scene it reflects. “Morning” is more serene. It conjures images of the sun rising above the horizon, starting with a glow before revealing a beacon of light. It’s a steady crescendo-to-decrescendo swell of smooth drones, something of which Rosy Parlane is a sure master. It’s a bite-sized piece of ambient bliss.

The far-off bells and hazy breeze that resound on “Apparatus and Installation” start off this collaboration between Ekca Liena (aka Daniel W.J. Mackenzie of Plurals) and Spheruleus (Harry Towell) with grace. These tracks seem to be largely field recordings layered with some instrumental passages and textures, although they’re usually composited in such a way that it can be difficult to discern what’s what. Much like the cover art, they are murky and washed out, details blending with one another to create more of an overall impression than distinct shapes or sounds. Many of the tracks feature chimes and bells in varying amounts — think windchimes, not arrangements for performance — along with unidentifiable textures that often lend a warm crackle or other surface tension to the mix. So-called “real instruments” appear to be involved as well; “Advection” has a dreamy, blurred shoegaze sound about it with repetitive guitar glides in the distance, while “Fog Bound” certainly lives up to its name with dense gloomy chords glowing in the distance. Only on the lengthy “Summing Elements” does a human voice distinctly enter the picture, in the form of a male vocal that sounds not of this time. (The juxtaposition of elements reminds me of the enchanted trail in the film *Yellowbrickroad*, albeit without the migraine-inducing noise.) Given the vast array of ambient-drone albums that hit the shelves on a weekly basis, it’s refreshing how compelling this music is — it really seems to creep up on me each time, and I like it a little more with each listen.

Ambient sound sculptor Stephan Mathieu delivers once more with this collection of hazy tracks on experimental French label Baskaru. The sounds within *Un Cœur Simple* are not so far off from the lighter, more organic sounds of his dusty 12k album *A Static Place*, but I’d venture that he veers even further into acoustic sound manipulations here, at least in terms of my impression when I hear it. Mathieu created the album as an audio accompaniment to a play based on Gustave Flaubert’s novel of the same name, but as with most of this sort of thing, I’ve listened and processed the music without that context. And without that context, the album still is a resounding success, another feather in Mathieu’s cap. “Eglise” and “Port” showcase him at his most elegiac and stunning, with subtle, undulating fields of diffuse sound. However, well over halfway through the album, there are some surprises. “Devenir Sound” is based almost completely around a dated choral recording, sounding fairly out of place (but no doubt directly aligned with Flaubert’s story), before the delicate piece “Félicité,” named after Flaubert’s character. It’s the album’s stark catharsis, not by virtue of dynamics but rather in its startling clarity. It sounds like plucked piano strings, eventually backed up with some drones and disembodied vocals (buried in the mix this time). Following it up with the extended coda of “Trace” is a nice touch, giving the album a keen sense of deliberate pacing and programming. As usual, Mathieu turns out another sterling collection of abstract masterpieces.

12k bossman Taylor Deupree’s trajectory as an ambient sound artist has been slow but sure. After leaving behind his techno roots (having spent time as a core member of Prototype 909 in the 90s), he started up 12k exploring the outer limits of severe minimalism and overtly electronic glitch music. When Richard Chartier started up the sister label Line, 12k’s focus began to veer toward more organic and acoustic sounds, something warmer and less severe. *Faint* is Deupree’s latest statement, and its title is appropriate. It comes on like a warm, breathy whisper, hushed and human. Its lighter touch, in sounds that appear to include a Fender Rhodes and guitar, is a far cry from the severe error music of *Occur*, released over ten years ago. But it’s a lovely set of tracks that justify Deupree’s rather dramatic albeit gradual tonal shift over the years. He’s arrived at something more meditative, serene yet still ambitious. That his photography perfectly complements his music on this one is no accident; its obscured and abstracted, diffuse images are a match for the drowsy, warm embrace of his sounds. “Thaw” is especially gorgeous, consisting mostly of airy pads that are barely there and a warm textural crinkle. “Sundown” also shares this pastoral beauty, layered with surface noise and delicate glitches below that surface, slowly evolving into something that starts off pretty and becomes downright beautiful — just like its title suggests.

**Harold Budd: “Dark Star” (Abandoned Cities, Cantil 1984)**

Harold Budd’s legendary status as an original in the field of instrumental and ambient music is irrefutable (even as he’s traditionally resisted being pigeonholed as an “ambient” composer), and yet I’ve only properly heard a few of his works. Back in 1993 I received a promo copy of Virgin’s A Brief History of Ambient Vol. 1, a 2-disc set that really is a pretty fantastic dip into the ambient pool. It’s often limited to excerpts or shorter pieces from a variety of artists running the gamut timewise, but of course it included seminal works from Brian Eno, Tangerine Dream, Jon Hassell, Roger Eno, and, of course, Harold Budd. “Dark Star” is the first long half of his 1984 release Abandoned Cities, and, prior to poking around online, I’d never heard it before. Its combo of dirge-like guitar and droning pads lends it a hazy psychedelia and somber mood that shows off a different side of his talents from his signature, “soft pedal” piano.
