By Anthony McCarten My thoughts after reading this article: As a female filmmaker, I'm well-versed in how male the industry is, and it is true. The industry is dominated by men in every way and the number of women who direct films and work in other aspects of the industry could certainly be improved -- and I was one of many people disappointed by Ava DuVernay being overlooked for a Best Director nod for Selma Movie. (I shared a bit about the whole Selma snub over on the Think Ten Media Group WordPress blog). Regarding women in film, there is a LONG way to go, but I do notice that each year a good percentage of films nominated for Best Picture are produced by women. The Theory of Everything is one such film. This medium article about getting the film made stood out for me as a female filmmaker for two reasons: 1) It was a female producer that came on board first and helped make the film possible, 2) It was a female's book that inspired the film. Yes, we need more women in film and more visibility for women who are working in film. But, yes, we are here already and doing quite well, if I do say so myself.
