Who came up with this for plane seating

Zodiac Seats France, an industry supplier, has patented a new seating configuration that rips out the (horrid) middle seat in favor of one that faces the rear. With “Economy Class Cabin Hexagon,” you get more neighbors than ever before—and they are right in your face.

The goal of the design is “to increase cabin density while also creating seat units that increase the space available at the shoulder and arm area.” To be fair, it seems to do that—because you’re no longer facing the same direction as your immediate neighbor, you have more shoulder room. And if you’re traveling with your kid or spouse, being face-to-face can be nice (we guess).

So I guess we’re throwing people who are too fat or too tall or otherwise doesn’t fit into the mold of the thin able-bodied mold under the bus, hmm?

This looks horrible and not at all practical. How the heck are you supposed to get into the middle seat that faces the back? And why, with even less “real estate” than before, is this supposed to be an improvement over the status quo? Anyone with long or fat legs isn’t going to think this seating configuration is a boon, unless they get the coveted, and probably more expensive, seat at the front with the extra room.

They literally want to pack us in like sardines, folks. And you know what’s going to happen if something this terrible is actually tried out (which is unlikely, but let’s just entertain the idea for a moment) – like, for instance, when a fat person’s hips touch a tall person’s legs (pointing in the other direction). You know who’s going to be blamed for the lack of space. Hint: it won’t be the airline.
