New York City residents have access to a number of campgrounds that are perfect for family camping adventures. One of the best places for families looking to travel upstate is the Catskills. During the summer, families can generally reach the mountains before the sun sets, even in Friday evening traffic. The area has multiple New York State campgrounds, which consistently offer showers with hot and cold water, toilets, and grills for public use.

One great campground is Little Pond, located on the western side of the Catskills mountain range. The site offers a 13-acre pond complete with a swimming beach, as well as streams that families can explore with rented canoes and rowboats. In addition, the famous fly-fishing spot, Beaverkill River, is very close to the site. Adventurous families can choose to hike or canoe their gear into “remote” areas that do not allow cars.

Another good option for families is Mongaup Pond, the largest body of water in the Catskills. This location has much to offer, including a large, festive campground that teems with activity; children’s nature programs run by park rangers; and an ice cream truck that tours the campground twice daily. Families can also explore the nearby Catskill Fish Hatchery.
