The A/P/A Institute at NYU is offering an excellent opportunity to discuss current APA issues. APA BRIDGE (Asian Pacific Americans Building Relationship to Inspire Diversity, Growth, and Empowerment) is seeking a diverse group of student leaders from various backgrounds that include race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, ability, spirituality, academic study, and socioeconomic level. Applicants with a range of experiences are encouraged to apply. The program is only open to freshmen, sophomores, and juniors. APA heritage is not required, but an interest in issues affecting APA communities is key. Be as honest as you can with your answers but keep your responses within 250 words per question. “Remapping: Eurocentrisms – Challenges for 21st Century Universities” is the second of a series of symposia re-thinking the conventional categories of ways of knowing. The symposium will examine Eurocentrism through diverse European and Euro-American traditions and modes of inquiry, while acknowledging the legacy of limits and problems of only operating within such frameworks. We will address the problems of knowledge formations such as “The Renaissance” and what counts as “history;” the foundational issues of “occidentalism” and “globalcentrism” as unwittingly assumed in our curricula and epistemologies; and questions of the changing nature of U.S. universities’ relations to global communities on the 21st century “campus.”

**GENERASIAN Note: This symposium will be an interesting discussion as it pertains specifically to NYU’s “Global University” plan. As NYU plans to build a new campus in Shanghai (and after its successful inaugural year in Abu Dhabi), we have to critically look at what that means for the general body of knowledge of the West and NYU’s position as an institution of higher education. This symposium is sparks an incredibly important discussion that is often forgotten under the exciting names of progress, growth, and expansion. But what exactly does this progress look like from the other side, and what is it that we’re growing over and expanding into? What does it mean when our campus expands internationally? Some of these questions and more will be discussed throughout the day. On another note, Sir Jack Goody is about 90 years old and continues to write about two books year. He is one of the leading scholars on Eurocentrism, and you wouldn’t want to miss him!**

U.S. Colleges and Universities have experienced rapid growth in Asian American student enrollment over the last four decades, paralleling growth in the general Asian American population following immigration reform in 1965. In the 1980s and 90s, increased Asian American enrollment at elite institutions was hailed within a discourse of celebrating diversity. At the same time, the increase in Asian American college students also drew fears of an “Asian Invasion.” Speakers at this event will consider the cultural, demographic and policy implications of increasing Asian American enrollment in higher education.

The Cammy Lee Leukemia Foundation Inc. (CLLF) is a non profit health service organization dedicated to raising awareness and concerns to the Asian and Pacific Islander and minority communities about the thousands of patients that suffer from fatal blood diseases such as leukemia, aplastic anemia, and non-hodgkin’s lymphoma. Many of them will unfortunately need a marrow or stem cell transplant for a life–saving cure.

On Tuesday, March 29, at 8pm in Kimmel 905, Freedoms 4 North Korea has the honor of hosting Adrian Hong to speak on behalf of his involvement in the field of human rights. Currently, Adrian Hong serves as Director of the Pegasus Project, an initiative that uses cutting-edge technology to penetrate closed societies and empower people in those nations to communicate amongst themselves, and with the outside world. He was also selected as one of the twenty 2010 TED Senior Fellows from across the globe. Adrian was the co-founder and former Executive Director of Liberty in North Korea (LiNK), an international NGO devoted to human rights in North Korea, and the protection of North Korean refugees all over the world. In 2008, he was a Visiting Lecturer for Ewha University in Korea teaching “America, Human Rights and Foreign Policy”. He is currently a Visiting Associate Professional Specialist for Princeton University.

So, the 60th Annual Grammy Nominations were announced yesterday morning, and somehow it left me with more mixed emotions than I’ve felt in a long time. On the one hand, we have many reasons to celebrate this year–the 2018 list of nominees is the most diverse group in all of Grammy history, especially when it comes to Black and LGBTQIA inclusion. Jay-Z, Childish Gambino, Kendrick Lamar, and more were all (deservedly) nominated for record of the year. Kesha and Lady Gaga were both nominated for two Grammys each, and out songwriter Justin Tranter was nominated for his first award as well. 

When it comes to inclusion in the entertainment industry, we’ve come a long way, and these nominees are just one example of that. Unfortunately, this progress has not been reflected within the Asian American community, as you can clearly see by the lack of Asian nominees for the 2018 Grammys. I can’t say I’m surprised, considering there aren’t really any huge Asian American names in the music industry. But it’s not because we’re not trying–it’s because those who run the system aren’t listening. This year I got the chance to discover Alice Gao, Niki Zefanya, Yaeji, and several other incredible Asian artists whose music deserves recognition–but none of them are getting the attention they deserve. 

While Grammy nomination entries can by submitted by any artists/record companies with commercially released music, all submissions are reviewed by a group of over 350 experts in the fields of jazz, R&B, rock, classical, new age, and more. These experts within the Academy go through several rounds of screening, being advised to vote in up to 15 categories in their areas of expertise as well as the 4 general categories (Record of The Year, Album of the Year, Song of The Year, and Best New Artist). Unfortunately, if you are a lesser known artist in the US (aka most Asian American artists) signed to a label with more well known artists, your label will most likely submit their song/album to be considered for Grammy nomination over yours. At the end of the day, it’s pretty much a self fulfilling prophesy. Since Asian American artists are almost never well known enough to qualify for the final rounds of nomination, their work is not often submitted. As a result, Asian Americans are continuously left out of the mainstream. The whole thing is a cycle that seems to have no end. 

Don’t get me wrong, I believe we should celebrate the victories we achieve, but I’m honestly so tired of writing and complaining about Asian American representation. You guys have heard it all before and I’m not here to preach the same message all over again, but my soul is tired y’all. While we should celebrate and cheer on our fellow POC, let’s remember that the entertainment industry is still far, far, from being the all inclusive community that we so desperately need.
