New York Mayor Bill de Blasio and members of the City Council want to allocate an extra $23 million a year for AIDS prevention and health care programs. De Blasio plans to announce the plan on Tuesday, which is World AIDS Day.

Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito also supports the funding that is expected to be part of the city budget for the fiscal year 2017. The plan is called the NYC Plan to End the Epidemic. It would benefit nearly 200,000 people a year while bringing down infections.

As reported in Poz, a statistical model has predicted that over the coming years, if present trends continue, by 2035 there will be 1.39 million cases of AIDS in America alone, and some 435,000 deaths, costing the health care system some $256 billion.

F or the CEO of one of the largest health care and research organizations serving the LGBT community in Chicago David Munar’s office is pretty small. The building stands on the corner of N. Broadway and Clarendon in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood. On this rare warm day in the middle of May his windows are open and the sounds of car horns and children pour in. Slight, with dark eyes flashing from behind wire-framed glasses and hands that never quite stay still, Munar is relaxed as he recalls with ease the day he was diagnosed with HIV over 20 years ago.
