One late summer afternoon, after Hawke was stung by the largest bee Thedas had ever seen, Malcolm Hawke—known as Father to some—taught his eldest child to wrap the sting in elfroot until it soothed the color of the swelling.

Hawke remembers being brave not because of bravery itself but because of pride and one man’s approval, the shape of his beard as the sun slipped into the evening hills.

‘And some day,’ Father said, wiping green stains off on his brown sleeves, ‘you’ll teach a child the same thing. It’s a cold country, but somehow we find ways of keeping our hands warm.’

And, only after they’re long gone beneath a lonely stone, do they ever meet them again. In the mirror, or a polished breastplate, or the water of the bath, a shaft of gray sunlight piercing a stubborn cloud to illuminate a very shiny puddle, enough to notice the shape of a beard on a jaw you haven’t seen in years.

‘I held him in my arms once,’ Dumar said. ‘And now, I’m holding him again.’

Thedas, Hawke thinks. Cities full of people burying their love.  

‘What will you write about him, Varric?’ Hawke asks, watching the sun rise over the boats on the docks: the mainmasts and the furled sails, the gulls pecking at the splintered wood.
