I HEART WORK

Ceramic designer and maker, Keith Brymer Jones, tells The Lifestyle Editor why he loves to work.

Who: Keith Brymer Jones

Work: Ceramic designer

Describe your work in 5 words?

Honest, functional, clean, simple, effective.

Why do you love what you do?

I love the immediacy of clay and I find throwing is conducive to my personality.

Who or what inspires you?

Shapes - I find architectural shapes particularly inspiring. I am dyslexic, so I am also often more interested in the shapes of the words in the Word collection than what they actually mean.

What is the best advice you have received?

Always love what you do and never give up.

What can’t you work without?

Clay.

What has been your best decision in your career so far?

It was a learning curve and an inspiration when I joined Dom at Make International (where I am also the Creative Director). I was relieved to be able to hand over my work to a team that do a really good job. It is great that now I know I am able to delegate what I do to people I can really trust.

What advice would you give to aspiring wannabees?

Know what you aren’t good at.

What do you have coming up next for your work?

We will expand the brand so keep your eyes peeled – there’s a home fragrance range on the way soon that we are really excited about.

If you could do another job what would you like to do and why?

Dance. I trained as a ballet dancer as a boy, but as I grew it became clear that I’d be too tall for a dancer. But I think I learnt a lot from the discipline you need to be a dancer and threw it all into making pots.

If you had an extra hour each day what would you do with it?

Make pots.

Thank you Keith for talking to The Lifestyle Editor.
