Via the Daily Cardinal: Decades before becoming one of the New York Times most renowned reporters, Anthony Shadid started at The Daily Cardinal, the college paper for University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Shadid, one of the few Arabic-speaking reporters among the Western press, covered some of the most tumultuous areas in recent history. He was awarded two Pulitzers for his coverage of the invasion and occupation of Iraq. He covered Egypt’s revolution last year. In 2002, he was shot in the shoulder while covering the Israeli occupied West Bank.
He was with the New York Times covering the Syria uprising when he died of a fatal asthma attack Thursday. He was 43.

Shadid, a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, defined journalist. He first appeared in the doorway of The Daily Cardinal office on a summer day in the late ’80s carrying an army rucksack nearly as tall as him. He told the editor he has just moved up from Oklahoma to attend UW-Madison and to write for The Daily Cardinal.
He had just gotten off the bus. He hadn’t found an apartment yet. Everything he owned was on his back. But, he was ready for his first assignment.
