DMC Demo Impressions
This week Capcom released a demo of the upcoming Devil May Cry sequel “DMC.” The fifth entry in the Devil May Cry series, (now developed by Ninja Theory,) is set to be released in mid-January and features a re-imagined world and cast of characters. The games most obvious departure is the drastic make over of the lead role Dante. Known over the years for a shaggy white ‘do and crimson leather coat, DMC reintroduces Dante as a raven haired punk with less of a Harrison Ford vibe and more of Misfits fanboy look. While the younger, angst ridden devil hunter was initially a turn off to followers of the series. But this different Dante brings with him a few new tricks and some interesting gameplay elements.
While Dante’s basic weapon set remains similar to what it has always been, holding the L2 and R2 triggers instantly morphs your sword into a different blade, both with unique attributes. There is the Arbiter a heavy hitting devil axe that delivers slow but devastating blows while Osiris is a heaven sent scythe that is quick and able to attack within a wider range. The pair of new blades really open up the standard combo system and creates a more versatile array of moves to draw from while you tear your way through Limbo City.
Another interesting addition is the platforming aspects that are introduced by Dante’s new handle on the powers of heaven and hell. Angel grabs can boost you up to higher ground and devil pulls and bring platforms closer to you. The young devil hunter can now also boost forward in mid air in order to clear large gaps that otherwise would be impassible. 'Cause its all about sticking it to the man in this game.
Unfortunately my play through of theDMCdemo ended abruptly with a pair of glitches. First Dante’s model became entirely invisible and once he reappeared he sunk through the game’s floor and into a painted sky abyss. Hopefully Ninja Theory and Capcom will be able to polish these jagged edges because aside from that mess,DMClooks like a solid action title.
DMC developed by Ninja Theory and Published by Capcom will be released on Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 January 15 2013.
