Tyler Ward vs. MattyBRaps: The Better “Boyfriend” [Cover To Cover Faceoff]
I thought there were going to be a million covers of this song. Literally, a million. Justin Bieber’s new single “Boyfriend” has all the makings of such a cover catastrophe: rapping lyrics, catchy chorus, and the “Biebs” attached. I expected to view a bunch of his diehard fans passionately screaming the song but instead, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the covers for “Boyfriend” were some of the most entertaining videos yet! My two favorites broke away from the mold, made me smile, and surprisingly, ones that I caught myself singing along to! So without further ado, Tyler Ward and MattyBRaps and their Cover to Cover faceoff!
Don’t forget, these contestants are being judged on What Makes the Video Cool, Their Version of the Song, and The IT Factor! Let us know your thoughts below!
Contestant Number 1: Tyler Ward is goofy. Tyler Ward can play a lot of instruments. And Tyler Ward is touring across Europe because of his success in his covers and original works. My favorite part of the video is also a little arm shake he does. Be on the lookout…
Contestant Number 2: …is 7 years old. Seriously. MattyBRaps is the modern day child star, except he’s breaking out all over YouTube. He (or his parents) rewrite a lot of songs to suit his age group, and produce a really funny, truly adorable video. He’s also been on The Wendy Williams Show, Dr. Phil, and a bunch of other programs. Try not to dance and laugh to this, I dare you:
So, who has the best cover? And who needs to take cover and try again?
What Makes The Video Cool: Winner, MattyB. Tyler’s version though fun, wasn’t as innovative as some of his other work. Then, I get to MattyB’s video, and it takes me a few times to understand why the actual video itself is so funny. Matty is performing in what is the setting of a normal rap video, but he’s at a playground or a school. Take away the fancy cars or beat up neighborhoods, put in park equipment, and he’s wearing the same clothes and pointing at the camera the same way. Once you realize that, the video suddenly becomes amazing. Point to Matty.
Their Version of the Song: Winner, Tyler Ward. The dude can absolutely sing. It’s nice to hear this song done without major tweaks, and the falsetto section, though echoed, is very impressive. The song’s also got some fusion of alternative country and rap, and I love every second of it. Matty’s words are hilarious and almost won it for him, but with age comes more vocal presence. Simply put, Tyler rocks [this round]!
The IT Factor: Winner, MattyB. There’s no way I wouldn’t give the IT Factor to this kid. He’s got miniature swagger written all over him. He’s going to be that kid in a year performing with B.o.B on some television show. He’s fun, he’s got guts, and he makes you want to watch more. With a handful of years away from when Bieber blew up at the age of 12, we know to keep an eye on you Matty!
The Winner: Matty B! Ah yes, he might be young, but his impressive presence and his subtly funny music video won him this round.
